Repair Of Pectus Carinatum

Repair Of Pectus Carinatum Video Guide

In this video I show my technique for repair of pectus carinatum. The patient here is 16 years old. I use a titanium plate to stabilise the chest and a double osteotomy to achieve the best result possible. The patient was discharged, pain free, on day three.

Summary:

Repair of Pectus Carinatum involves treating a chest wall deformity where the breastbone protrudes outward, commonly known as “pigeon chest.” The condition may cause cosmetic concerns, breathing difficulties, and occasional chest pain. It is often caused by abnormal rib cartilage growth and can be genetic or related to connective tissue disorders.

Treatment options include non-surgical methods like bracing for adolescents and surgical options for severe cases, such as the Ravitch procedure or minimally invasive surgery. Recovery typically involves physical therapy and monitoring for recurrence. Early intervention is key to effective management, with most patients seeing significant improvements in both appearance and respiratory function.
